Sikkim has become the first State of the North East to start using the Integrated Transport System. Transport Minister, DT Lepcha, inaugurated the ITS control room at the SNT premises here on Saturday and heralded this latest development as a proud moment for all of Sikkim.
The integrated Transport System includes the facility and technology to govern the speed of buses, track their location in real time, check live video footage of the buses and has a panic button through which the passengers can inform the control room about any situation, explained Secretary, Transport Department, SBS Bhadauria.
The control room can also track SNT tankers through this facility and also the number of tickets sold at all SNT stations, revenue collected, track the number of busses undergoing repairs etc.
Also on the day, the Minister flagged off four new “Super AC” bus services which have begun plying from Gangtok to Chenrezig Statue via Pelling, to Char Dham (Sideshwara Dham) via Namchi, to the Pakyong Airport in East Sikkim and to Siliguri.
During a flag-off programme held at the SNT bus yard here, the Minister offered khadas to the drivers and the first passengers of the newly inaugurated buses and wished them a safe journey.
All four buses are Deluxe Bus BS IV, Green in Color with fully air conditioned, 19-Seaters with reclining seats, power steering, Air Brakes, ABS, Speed Governors, Fire Extinguishers, Panic Button, Extra Comfortable Seats, GPS system, CCTV camera, Dustbins, curtains, ticket printing machine, Automated Door locking system and other such facilities.
Speaking to media persons, the Minister remarked that more people travelling by SNT buses nowadays and that this reflected the level of trust that SNT has gained over the years.
“This is just the beginning, the Department has plans to bring more such AC buses in the days to come,” he informed.
He shared that more than six AC buses will be acquired by the SNT in the near future and that these would ply to remote villages.
At present, SNT has 120 buses. The flag off programme was also attended by Gangtok Mayor, Shakti Singh Chaudhari, Transport Department officers and other staff.
