Sikkim conferred 6th JRD Tata Memorial Award

NITI Aayog Vice Chairman lauds Sikkim’s Small Family Scheme

Chief Minister Pawan Chamling today received the 6th JRD Tata Memorial Awards conferred by The Population Foundation of India which had selected Sikkim as the best performing State under ‘high focus category – North East’, a press communique received from the Resident Commissioner, New Delhi, informs.

The selection was made on the basis of index of 35 indicators recommended by the Technology Advisory Committee for the awards with strong bearing on reproductive health, gender equity, family planning, water, sanitation and hygiene, women’s empowerment, gender-based violence and fertility of the population.

While delivering his JRD Tata address, the Vice-Chairman, NITI Aayog, Dr Rajiv Kumar, lauded Sikkim for its overall development and also in the health sector and made special mention of the Small Family Scheme.

He said, “I congratulate the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Pawan Chamling for launching the Small Family Scheme to delay marriage of girl child providing also monetary incentives”.

Accepting the award, the Chief Minister said that it was a great honour to receive the prestigious award and expressed his gratitude towards the Population Foundation of India for recognizing the strides made by Sikkim.

The Chief Minister further said that he found special privilege in accepting this second award on behalf of the Sikkim State and its people, the first being the 4th JRD Tata Memorial Award conferred on Sikkim in January, 2009.
