George Telegraph moves into Gold Cup quarterfinals
Gangtok, 24 Oct:
George Telegraph, Kolkata, secured a berth in the quarter-final round of the ongoing 38th All India Governor’s Gold Cup International Football Tournament 2018 here at Paljor Stadium. In the second pre quarter-final match played today, George Telegraph edged past Armed Police Force Club, Nepal, by a solitary goal.
Bothteams took to the field with an attacking game and maintained constant pressure on each other with a flurry of attacks and counter-attacks. However, both teams failed to convert any attack and the first half seemed to be headed for a goalless fare until Mahitesh Roy scored for George Telegraph in the dying minutes of the first half.
APFC players continued with their attacking game from the start of the second half, but could not breach the defence line of the Kolkata team.
In the seven-minute injury time, APFC-Nepal even received two direct free kicks from near the D-box area of the opponents but failed to capitalize on these opportunities. Finally, George Telegraph won the match by a solitary goal with the final whistle by the referee.
George Telegraph will now take on an ISL team, ATK Kolkata [Reserve] in the quarter-final match on 28 Oct.
On 25 Oct, the third pre-quarterfinal match will be played between home team Sikkim Aakraman Football Club and Sogolband United, Manipur.
