Aakraman holds nerve to down Sagolband United

Local team to now square off against Bengaluru FC in quarterfinals of Gold Cup

Gangtok, 25 Oct:

Another home team has secured a berth in the quarter-final round of the ongoing 38th All India Governor’s Gold Cup International Football Tournament 2018 here at Paljor Stadium. In a nail-biting pre quarter-final match played today, Sikkim Aakraman Football Club outplayed Sagolband United, Manipur, 04-02 in the tie-breaker.

Both teams played an attacking game from the start, with attacks and counter-attacks but missed the net to take the lead in the match and the first half ended goalless draw.

Again, in the second half, both teams failed to capitalize some golden opportunities and the full time too ended goalless. The match however made for some riveting football save the scoreboard not moving.

The match then entered into extra-time to decide the winner but even this ended goalless.

Finally, in the tie-breaker decided through a penalty shoot-out, Aakraman players converted all four shots into goals but Manipur players managed to score only two in four shots.

With this 4-2 win, Sikkim Aakraman FC will now take on an ISL team, Bengaluru Football Club [Reserve], in the quarter-final scheduled for 29 October.

The last pre quarter-final match of the tournament will be played between Rainbow SC, Kolkata, and Calcutta Customs on Friday.
