State Level Advisory Committee on School Safety holds first meeting

School safety advisory committees to be formed at dist and sub-division levels

Gangtok, 26 Oct:

The Chief Secretary, after reviewing the State Action Plan on School Safety, instructed that advisory committees on school safety be formed at the district and sub-division level as well, and official press communiqué informs.

His observations were made at the first meeting to the State Level Advisory Committee on School Safety convened today.

The state-level advisory committee was constituted recently andis chaired by the Chief Secretary and includes the Additional Chief Secretary, Human Resource Development Department, State Relief Commissioner-cum-Secretary, and Director (School Education) are its Members.

The CS chaired the first meeting of the Committee during which various aspects of school safety and steps taken by the State Government were reviewed.

Various steps on school safety are being taken jointly by Human Resource Development Department and Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, the release states.

A detailed presentation on the activities conducted under the School Safety Programme was made by the Director, School Education.

Apart from his instructions to form school safety advisory committees at the district and sub-division level as well, the Chief Secretary further directed that meetings of the advisory committee be conducted twice a year to monitor the implementation of the guidelines.

The State Level Advisory Committee was notified in July earlier this year following directions of the Supreme Court and as per guidelines received from the National Disaster Management Authority on School Safety Policy.

The Chief Secretary further directed that fire extinguishers be installed in all the schools and structural safety of the school building to be included as one of the preconditions by HRDD while granting recognition to any private school.

He also desired that more training on preparedness to be imparted to school teachers in association with NDMA, preferably at the state level.
