Justice Vijay Kumar Bisht sworn in as Chief Justice of Sikkim

Gangtok, 30 Oct:

The swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed Chief Justice of Sikkim, Justice Vijay Kumar Bisht, was held todayat Ashirvad Bhawan in Gangtok today.

Governor Ganga Prasad administered the oath to Justice Bisht while Chief Secretary, AK Srivastava, read out the warrant of appointment of the newly appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Sikkim.

The ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, PD Rai, MP, Rajya Sabha,Hissay Lachungpa, Speaker, Sikkim Legislative Assembly, KN Rai, Deputy Speaker, SG Lepcha, Minister for Tourism, Uttrakhand,SatpalJi Maharaj, Judge, High Court of Sikkim, Justice Bhaskar Raj Pradhan, and other dignitaries.

It may be mentioned here, senior Uttarakhand High Court Judge, Justice Vijai Kumar Bisht was elevated and transferred on 24 Oct as the new Chief Justice of Sikkim.

Earlier this month, the collegiums of three Supreme Court judges including Chief Justice of India,Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Kurian Joseph had recommended Justice Bisht’s elevation.

Born in Sept 1957 in Lansdowne, PauriGarhwal district, Justice Bisht hasa law degree from the Allahabad University. He was enrolled as anadvocate with the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh in 1984 and practiced at the Allahabad High Court till Nov 2000. He was shifted to Uttarakhand High Court after the State’s formation.

During his 16-year tenure at Allahabad, he served as legal advisor andstanding counsel for various government departments such as the Uttar Pradesh Higher Secondary Education, Indian Railways, UP Land Development Corporation, UP Cooperative Housing Federation and Ghaziabad Development Authority.

Notably, Justice Bisht was in the division bench along with the thenChief Justice KM Joseph which quashed President’s rule in Uttarakhand in Apr 2016.
