Gangtok Runs for Unity


Gangtok, 31 Oct (IPR): Governor Ganga Prasad today flagged off the “Run for Unity” from Paljor Stadium to mark the 143rd birth anniversary of Sadar Vallabhbhai Patel. The run was organized as part of Rashtiya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) by the Sports & Youth Affairs Department.

A large number of school students from all the four districts, youth, sports enthusiasts and ITBP jawans took part in the run.

While paying tribute to the great freedom fighter who went on to become the first Home Minister of India, the Governor said, “National Unity Day is being celebrated nationwide on the auspicious occasion of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. We are very grateful to the creator of national modern India and the Iron Man so let us all pay homage to him and take the pledge to further strengthen the unity and integrity of the people by promoting brotherhood in the society as responsible citizens and contribute to nation building.”

He further said that we should unite with a feeling of brotherhood and integrity towards our nation and participate in today's run with the determination to strengthen the path towards nation building.

The Governor further stated that nation-building starts from the family and we should begin by becoming good human beings and inspire youths towards shaping the nation to further great heights.

The Governor further highlighted that in Gujarat today, the Prime Minister was dedicating the Statue of Liberty built as a tribute to the icon. He said that this statue is a symbol of India’s integrity and unity and how we should learn how to grow from strength to strength and always stay united. He encouraged the students to always look forward to rekindle the spirit of oneness and serve the country with their best capabilities.

The programme was attended by Chief Secretary AK Shrivastava, Additional Chief Secretary to Governor, Dr KJayakumar, Secretary of SYA Department, SD Dhakal, Director SportsKamal Chettri and officials of state government, ITBP and participating students.

Earlier, the Chief Secretary highlighted the contribution of the Iron Man of India. He elaborated on how the great freedom fighter was responsible for us living in a unified India today. As such, it is appropriate to celebrate his birth anniversary as the National Unity Day since it is a historic and inspiring occasion for all Indians, he said.

The country’s youth should take a leaf out of Patel’s life on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the country’s great personality and bow to the great stalwart who unified India and served the nation tirelessly, he stated.
