Mangan, 16 Nov [IPR]: In view of the ensuing General Election 2019, the First level Checking of Electronic Voting Machines [EVMs] and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails [VVPATs] started today at North District Zilla Panchayat Bhavan Hall in Mangan, North Sikkim.
The FLC process of EVMs is being done under the supervision of District Collector [West] cum District Election Officer, Karma R Bonpo, Additional District Collector, Somnath Adhikari, and Sub Divisional Magistrate, Mangan, PW Lepcha.
The checking of the EVMs will be conducted by certified engineers from Bharat Electronic Limited [BEL] and will be assisted by the staff of Election Department, North. The area where the FLC process is being conducted is under strict vigil of the Sikkim Armed Police and security arrangements are being monitored by Superintendent of Police, North, KD Shangderpa. The entire process of FLC is being conducted as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India.
Today the strong room where the EVMs were stored were opened in the presence of the representatives of political parties namely Sikkim Democratic Front, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha and Bharatiya Janata Party.
The process of FLCs aims to check the functioning of the machines and if any defective machines are found, they will be sent to the manufacturing company for repairs. Recording of the process is being done through CCTV cameras and is also being webcasted to the office of the CEO to ensure transparency.
The FLC process in North district will take about a week to complete given that the district has only three Assembly constituencies. The DEO, North has appealed to the political parties to ensure that their representatives are present throughout the procedure.
