Gangtok, 26 Nov:
A three-day socio-environmental program was conducted at Government Senior Secondary School, Makha recently. The program commenced with the inauguration of a Mini-Hall on the roof top of the main building by Zilla Panchayat, Hem Raj Adhikari in the presence of Principal, SMC members, Panchayats of Patuk-Singbel GPU and other dignitaries.
The hall had been constructed by members of Thapa family and Prem Bahadur Thapa of Makha in memory of his wife, Shiva Kumari Rai. It may also be noted that Shiva Kumari Rai is a noted academician, who had retired from the same school in 1993, and has also been honoured with the State Teacher’s Award (1983), National Teacher’s Award (1988) and also a Silver Medal from the Home Ministry, Govt. of India in 1991.
At the end of the program the students were given home-work regarding discussion on topics of cleanliness, health and hygiene among their family members and neighbours.
Monday’s program started with a short speech and feedback during the morning assembly. More than 100 students participated in a Rally starting from the school premises and cleaning a total stretch of 1 km alongside the school premises and the Makha-Singtam highway finally ending at the Sisney Khola.
The scraps collected was then brought to school and segregated for donation to a local scrap vendor M/s Mohammad-de-Traders at Singtam who is also the environmental partner of the school. On reaching the school they were welcomed by a small “Zero-waste Jhalmurai picnic”.
It may also be noted that the idea of “Golden Rupee” on waste management adopted by the school has very recently been appreciated by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Govt. of India and has also been highlighted in the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin portal.
