Pedestrian walkway near Palace Gate inaugurated

Gangtok, 28 Nov:

UD&HD Minister, NK Subba today inaugurated the pedestrian walkway from Palace Gate till Dukit Pan Dokan. Princess Hope Leezum Namgyal and Gangtok MLA, Pintso Chopel Lepcha were present along with government and GMC officials.

Addressing the media, Commissioner GMC, Tshewang Gyachho stated that along the said stretch the road was very narrow making it inconvenient for students and the public to walk through. To resolve this problem, the GMC approached the palace for support wherein the palace immediately sanctioned necessary land for the cause of the people and the students, he informed.

“We, on behalf of the GMC, would like to express our gratitude to the palace, Princess Hope Leezum Namgyal for such gracious gesture,” said Mr Gyachho. He went on to say that the walkway has been constructed using the funds availed under 14th Finance Commission wherein three Councillors allotted their share of the fund for the development of the walkway. He thanked the Councillors for the same.

The total project cost was Rs. 58.92 lakh and the length of the walkway is around 240 feet with 4 feet width. The work of the walkway commenced on 22 March, 2018 and was completed on 27 November, 2018.

Gangtok MLA, Pintso Chopel Lepcha expressed his gratitude on behalf of all Gangtokians for the support extended by Princess Hope Leezum Namgyal in making the walkway possible for the welfare of students and other pedestrians.

He said the project would not have been possible if the palace had not provided land for the project. He also thanked the Chief Minister for the beautiful concept along with Minister UD&HD for all the developmental activities being initiated in Gangtok.
