Too many coincidences for Power Dept fire to have been accidental: SKM

Gangtok, 06 Dec:

Sikkim Krantikari Morcha today pointed out to a string of coincidences to suggest that the recent fire in the Energy & Power Department might not have been an accident.

SKM spokesperson, Jacob Khaling, while addressing a press conference here today, pointed out that the Prime Minister, during his recent visit to Sikkim, had mentioned the crores given to Sikkim for strengthening of the power transmission network and for rural electrification.

There were also several queries filed under the Right To Information Act which the Department had remained unable to furnish proper details for, he contended further, and stated that when the record room of the Department suffers a fire incident in the wake of such developments, it suggested at more than mere coincidence.

He also mentioned the recent transfer of a senior police officer to the Fire & Emergency Services and added that the officer was seen as pro-Government. “When you have such officers, such incidents will happen,” he said.

Mr Khaling also took issue with the Chief Minister’s recent comments to government employees during the inauguration of Tashiling Secretariat and said that it was unfortunate that the CM was using official government functions to make political speeches.

He also invited government servants to weigh their options by themselves and decide what was best for them and the State.

He also said that the SKM was thankful to government servants for having consistently supported the party since its inception and expressed confidence that a majority of government servants will support SKM in 2019.

The party also continued its questioning of the “one family, one job” initiative of the State Government and Bikash Basnet of SKM pointed out that when SKM promised 30,000 government jobs, the SDF mocked their proposal, but now that elections were round the corner, the SDF Government has suddenly created 17,000 openings.

SKM was still not opposed to the move, he clarified, adding that what should be ensured was transparency.

The SKM party officials also informed that the proposed 5-day long Youth & Nari convention of the part scheduled to begin on 19 December will focus on the youth on the first two days, mark the tenth year of the “Rolu Picnic” on the third day, and the final two days will feature the women’s convention of the party.
