Namprikdang Namsoong festival gets underway

The Namprikdang Namsoong festival in Upper Dzongu, North Sikkim, started today. The festival marks the new year of the Lepcha tribe and provides for a magnificent visual treat of folk dances, traditional games and exotic Sikkimese (Lepcha) cuisine. The festival will continue till 16 Dec.
The inaugural function today was attended by Gangtok MLA, Pintso Chopel Lepcha, in the presence of Deputy Speaker cum MLA Dzongu, Sonam Gyatso Lepcha, Chairperson SNT, Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, DC North, Karma R Bonpo, Tom Tshering Lepcha, OSD, Sr SP North, KD Sangdarpa, officials from various departments, panchayat members and the general public.
Prof Prakash Patnaik from Delhi University who was the special guest of the function highlighted the importance of languages that bond different communities and further appreciated the festival being organised by the committee.
Earlier, the function was welcomed by Chairperson SNT, Pintso Namgyal Lepcha.
A colorful traditional cultural program was presented by the different communities from Sikkim and other parts of the country.
The main venue for the celebration of this festival at Namprikdang Ground is situated next to the confluence of Rivers Teesta and Rangeet with a beautiful traditional Lepcha house that commemorates the resting place of their ancestors. Traditional Lepcha dance and food stalls serving authentic Lepcha cuisine provide visitors an opportunity to experience local culture.
The chief guest in his speech wished the people on the occasion and highlighted that Namsoong is a festival of all communities urging all to participate in the celebrations at Namprikdang.
The State level tribal festival is being organized by Social Justice, Empowerment and Welfare Department, North District Administration and Namsoong Celebration Committee Dzongu and funded by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. The festival has been organized for the last forty years.
A football tournament for both men and women is also being organized by the committee. The Women’s tournament is being organized under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao banner to highlight the scheme and provide a platform for the girl child to excel in various fields.
