Shiva Hang Subba - Always Onwards
Gangtok, 23 Dec:
“I believe that nothing is impossible in life when your passion and dedication is strong,” shares long-distance runner from Sikkim, Shiva Hang Subba.
He has proved this with his impressive performance in the recent 12 Hour Stadium Run held on 16 December at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi where he secured the second position covering 283 laps of the stadium and a distance of 119.709 KMs in 12 hours.
This achievement is very momentous for him as he was just one lap behind Abhishek Rathor of Delhi, who finished on the first position covering 284 laps and a distance of 120.132 KMs in 12 hours.
After returning from New Delhi, Shiva Hang shared his journey and achievements and future plans with SummitTimes.
Shiva Hang hails from Timbrong, Yuksom in West Sikkim. He completed his schooling from Darap Senior Secondary School in the year 2016. After schooling, he took the decision to support his family rather than to go for the further studies. There are nine members in his family so he took the responsibility of his family at a young age along with his father.
“It was very hard for my father to run the family alone so I started to work part time in a travel agency as a trekking guide for tourists coming to our area. Although many challenges and obstacles have still been coming on my way I have learned to always move forward in life,” he says.
Shiva Hang was always passionate about sports, trekking and adventure activities. After being motivated and inspired by initiatives and achievements of the Marathon Man of Sikkim, Amar Subba, his interest in marathon became stronger.
In the meantime, Amar Subba recognized Shiva Hang’s passion and potential for marathons at the right time and started to guide and prepare him for long distance running events. He also started to prove his mettle in different marathons held in the State.
In his debut appearance in an ultra marathon, Shiva Hang finished the 12 Hours Stadium Run held in August earlier this year at Bangalore on the fourth position by covering a distance of 101.5 KMs. On the basis of this performance, he was shortlisted by NEB Sports Entertainment for the recent 12 Hours Stadium Run held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
“I consider 2018 a lucky year for me for securing the fourth position in Bangalore and then the second position in the recent 12 Hours Run in New Delhi. However, these achievements have been possible only due the support to my trainer, Amar Subba and my family, friends and well wishers,” he expressed.
It has taken a lot of hard work, dedication, sacrifice and commitment to shine the name of Sikkim and bag these achievements in such a short span of his ultra marathon journey.
Apart from his daily running, Shiva Hang has been practicing with his trainer on hilly terrains and on other routes for competitions.
Sharing his future plans, he says, “I wanted to continue my long distance running to shine Sikkim’s name at national and international events. I also wanted to motivate the younger generation towards sports and healthy activities to stay mentally and physically fit and strong.”
Likewise, his trainer Amar Subba expressed his immense happiness and satisfaction with the achievements of Shiva Hang.
“I have been trying my best to prepare him for the international events. He has a lot of potential to do even better and his strong commitment and dedication have helped him in the short span that he has been in the sport,” he added.
