The SFA president informs that the association is organising the tournament for the first time and that this will henceforth be an annual event on the SFA calendar.

He said that the main objective behind the tournament was to support women’s empowerment in Sikkim by providing them better exposure and regular platform to make a career in football.

He pointed out that Anju Tamang, Lako Phuti Bhutia and other women footballers from Sikkim have already proved that there were opportunities and potential in football for women.

“AIFF has also started a national women’s league and five women footballers from Sikkim have been playing for different clubs. So, another objective of this tournament is to spot talented footballers and organise camps for them to put together an SFA Women’s XI for the national league,” Mr Ethenpa said.
