Sikkim State University [SSU] has been recognised by the University Grants Commission [UGC] and empowered to award degrees.
This confirmation arrived through an official letter dated 01 January 2019 from UGC to the SSU Vice-Chancellor.
SSU, established by the Government of Sikkim as a State University, is empowered to award degrees as specified by the UGC under section 22 of the UGC Act 1965 by conducting courses through its own departments, its constituent colleges and/or through its affiliated colleges in regular mode, the letter from UGC conveys.
It is further informed that name of the university has been included in the list maintained by the UGC on its website.
A press release from the university states that SSU Vice-Chancellor, Prof GK Niroula, has welcomed the UGC recognition as a big achievement and a development which has opened the doors for the university to carry out its activities in the state with renewed pace and energy.
He also gave credit to Chief Minister Pawan Chamling for his work towards providing quality education to students of Sikkim up to the higher levels.
He added that the university will fulfill the vision of the CM to provide quality education to students from the poor financial backgrounds and expressed that the university has arrived at a new milestone due to the farsightedness and encouragement of the CM.
The VC has also thanked the HRDD Minister RB Subba and Additional Chief Secretary GP Upadhyaya for making the UGC recognition possible for SSU.
The release further mentions that the HRD Minister has congratulated the VC on the recognition and further urged that the university now work with diligence to provide quality higher education to students.
Likewise, Mr Upadhyaya remarked that this was a new chapter in the story of higher education in the State and assured to provide all possible help and support to the university.
The release informs that Sikkim State University was established under the Sikkim University Act 2003 and amendment Act of 2017 in the year 2008. It is added that teaching in two departments - of Sanskrit and Nepali - started on 24 August earlier this year.
As per the VC, ten new departments will be started from the coming session - English, History, Economics, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Commerce, Computer Science, Political Science and Sociology.
Prof GK Niroula took charge as the VC of SSU on 06 July this year and immediately started the administrative and educational activities at the university. Work on the logo and website design and other infrastructural works are currently underway.
