The Human Resource Development Department today announced that post matric scholarship will be released to beneficiaries directly into their respective bank accounts after the Chief Minister hands over the scholarship to five beneficiaries each at the Janta Melas to be held later this month.
An HRDD press release informs that the State Government has approved and sanctioned an amount of Rs 8.55 crores in the current financial year to provide the post matric scholarship to 1,578 beneficiaries till the financial year 2016.
The release informs that the State Government has awarded Post Matric Scholarship to all local students under the Merit and General categories pursuing various courses within and outside the State since 1994.
The scheme was amended in the year 2017 with an enhanced rate of scholarship for all courses. The Merit scholarship amount ranging from Rs. 1,600 to Rs. 2,000 per month is awarded to students who secure 80% and above marks in class XII Board examination or equivalent in a single sitting.
Further, annual reimbursement of a maximum Rs. 10,000 per annum is also awarded to some of the Notified subjects (MBBS, B Tech and Honours courses).
General scholarship is granted to all local students securing less than 80% but more than 60% marks in a single sitting in selected courses as notified, subject to both parents’ combined income being less than Rs 10,000 per month.
Further, annual reimbursement of maximum Rs 10,000 per annum is awarded to some of the notified subjects like MBBS, B Tech and Honours courses.
For Diploma, the scholarship is Rs. 800 pm is awarded under Merit and General Categories.
The Post Matric scholarship is also awarded for pursuing Ph. D courses at Rs 6,000 per month for regular candidates with subjects related to the State of Sikkim with a contingency grant of Rs 15,000 per annum for a maximum period of three years and Rs 3,000 pm for in-service candidates with reimbursement of Rs 12,000 per annum.
Post Matric scholarship is also awarded for M Phil at Rs 5,000 pm for regular candidates and 50% of this rate for in-service candidates for a maximum period of 18 months.
