GANGTOK, 15 JAN:
Sikkim Krantikari Morcha today lodged an FIR against the Chief Minister at Sadar Thana alleging that his remarks on menstruation at a party meeting on 05 Dec were derogatory and outraged the modesty of women. It may be recalled that while speaking about untouchability, the CM had pointed out how, even today, some women were ostracized when on their monthly menstrual cycle.
The FIR filed by the SKM women’s wing, also accuses the CM of making communal remarks against different castes and speaking derogatorily about their religious beliefs.
Addressing a press conference here today, SKM Nari Morcha [East & North District] reiterated its demand for an apology from the CM and announced that they will continue with their protest until an apology was issued.
SKMwomen’s wing vice convener, Ganga Parsai, insisted that the remark was humiliating and disrespectful to women and also rejected SDF claims that the CM’s comment was to initiate a wider discussion on menstruation which is still used to discriminate against women.
Ms Parsai alleged that the CM has always been using cheli morcha to defend him and questioned why the women’s wing of the SDF was turning a blind eye to what the SKM sees as an offensive comment.
She also questioned the present whereabouts of a woman Minister and asked why the government was not taking a medical bulletin on the Minister.
SKM vice-president, Chung Kipu Lepcha, East District Chief convener, Prabha Pradhan and Chalak morcha vice-president, Rajani Gurung, in turn asserted that the CM should apologize for his remarks.
Nari Morcha general secretary, Pabitra Bhandari, suggested the SDF cheli morcha members to carefully read the chapterm ‘Anek Adhyay Ma Beena,’ from the book ‘Afnai Maan Ka Pardesh Haru’ by Pravin Rai Jumeli to learn about the situation of women in Sikkim.
