Forest Fire in Upper Luing

Gangtok, 3 Feb:

A major fire broke out at Upper Luing area near Ranka across the hill this afternoon. While the reason behind the fire was not established at the time of going to print, since it had still not been doused completely and because there are habitations nearby, worry remains.

Local residents have requested the administration for immediate help.

On the ground, SFO Samser Subba, informed that they received information about the first at 1:30 pm and that the Fire Services was closely monitoring the situation.

He informed that the area struck by the forest fire breakout was one and a half kilometers above the road, making access impossible to launch a fire-fighting effort.

He further added that rocks, rendered unstable after the undergrowth holding them firm was brned away, were falling continuously, making approach fraught with danger.

"We are monitoring the situation closely so that the habitations remain safe," he said.

Adding futher he stated that the Fire department will present the detailed report tomorrow.
