SKM protests use of Namthang school ground for SDF function on working day
Namthang, 04 Mar:
Sikkim Krantikari Morcha today marched out in protest against Sikkim Democratic Front’s foundation day celebrations for Namthang-Rateypani constituency at Namthang Senior Secondary School play ground. SKM party workers blocked the road protesting the permission given to SDF to hold its public meeting at the school ground in contravention of rules which disallow holding of party meetings at school grounds on working days.
SKM protested this relaxation of rules for SDF when the South District administration and Election department have themselves issued notices that the Namthang School play ground is been allowed for party programmes only on school holidays.
SKM’s South District president, Ganesh Rai, while speaking to SummitTimes, alleged that the district administration and election department were favouring SDF by allowing it to hold a party meeting at the school ground even though classes were in session.
“We are demanding a clarification from the district administration as to how they allotted the ground for a political function on a school working day and our protest will continue till the department clarifies,” he said.
Meanwhile, District Collector [South], Ragul K., informed that the district administration had handled the situation and that things were brought under control.
“We reached the spot and spoke with the supporters and leaders of SKM after which they dispersed from the spot. Similarly, district administration has called an all-party meeting for Thursday when the matter will be discussed,” he said.
Sikkim Police had deployed police force and IRBn personnel to the spot to contain the situation and stop matters from getting out of hand.
