2 injured in SDF-SKM clash at Melli

Melli, 08 Mar:

Sikkim Democratic Front and Sikkim Krantikari Morcha workers clashed today at

Sadam-Suntaley under Melli constituency in South Sikkim. Two SDF workers are said to have been injured in the clash and have been referred to Siliguri for treatment.

Both parties are blaming each other for starting the violence with SDF claiming that

SKM workers questioned SDF workers who were checking on road carpeting work going on at Sadam Suntaley.

According to SDF South Working Committee president, Ganesh Rai, a group of SKM supporters led by CLC president, Suren Tamang, Tilak Basnet, Anil Gurung, Gopal Tamang started arguing with SDF workers, Deo Prakash Pradhan, Amar Khulal, Om Agarwal, JE Saunak Bhandari and some others, alleging that villagers were not consulted before starting the carpeting work.

After the intervention of the concerned Junior Engineer, Saunak Bhandari, the SKM youth went off but returned later in a larger crowd and began attacking those present. He informed that the JE and others managed to escape but Amar Khulal and Deo Prakash Pradhan got badly beaten up by the SKM group.

On the other hand, SKM South District president In-charge, Ganesh Rai informed that SKM had door-to-door visit programme at Sadam-Suntaley area today when SDF workers started taunting the SKM workers calling them ‘goonda’ and ‘chor ko party’. One SKM worker was recording all this when one SDF youth snatched the phone and threw it away. This was followed by heated altercation which soon escalated into a fight.

SP South, Manish Verma, when contacted, informed that police received information about the clash at around 12:30 PM.

Meanwhile, an FIR has been lodged by SDF and family of those injured against the attackers at Melli Police station and a case has been registered under sections 186/147/148/326/34 IPC. The police has started search operation to arrest the accused but no arrests have been made so far.
