Gangtok, 17 Mar:
Gangtok-resident, Phurba Sherpa, today announced plans to contest the upcoming Assembly election from Gangtok constituency as an independent candidate.
The 45-year-old hails from Development Area and has been associated with different social and sport organisations. He is the chief coordinator in Sikkim Football Association and was the former president of an I-league football club, Denzong Boys, from Sikkim.
While announcing his decision to contest the election at a press conference here today, Mr Sherpa said that he was motivated to join electoral politics by his desire to work for the betterment of sports, health and education sectors in the State.
He stressed that these three sectors are interrelated and directly connected to the people.
On Gangtok-specific issues, he flagged traffic congestion, parking problems, irregular power supply and other civic problems and assured to address these issues if elected.
“I was an active member of Sikkim Democratic Front but was not able to give time to the party when I got busy with social and sports activities. This is my electoral debut and I have not intentions of backing down,” he said.
He plans to submit his nomination papers and begin his election campaign on Monday.
