Gangtok, 18 Mar:
The Chief Electoral Officer, Sikkim, in an advisory issued today to all political parties and public, warned against posting content of offensive nature on social media.
The advisory mentions that the CEO's attention has been drawn to social media posts by some individuals containing hate speech, derogartory remarks and reports, intentional insults and photographs.
"These kind of actitivities are likely to create feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will in the society and disrupt the peace in the state during the General Elections 2019," the advisory adds.
While warning political parties and the people at large to refrain from such activities, the advisory underlines that such actions were punishable under several provisions of the Indian Penal Code attracting punishments ranging from imprisonment from two to five years and fines.
