Gangtok, 22 Mar:
Hamro Sikkim Party working president, Bhaichung Bhutia, will be contesting the assembly elections from two constituencies - Gangtok and Tumin-Lingee, both in East Sikkim. He has now become the fourth candidate to be contesting from two constituencies after Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, SKM’s Kunga Nima Lepcha and SDF’s DT Lecha who is contesting from Gnathong-Machong and Martam-Rumtek have been named for two constituencies each. In fact, among one of the contenders for Gangtok along with Mr Bhutia is Mr Lepcha who is also contesting from Shyari.
HSP released its fourth list comprising of nine candidates for the upcoming elections on Thursday.
Keshar Lal Thapa has been named for Gyalshing-Bermiok, Durga Bahadur Chettri for Temi Namphing, Prakash Sharma for Maneybong Dentam, Hukum Chandra Rai for Namchi Singhithang, Tashi Topgay Bhutia for Rinchenpong, Sukhraj Subba for Soreng-Chakung and Philip Lamichaney for Upper Burtuk constituency.
Speaking to media persons, Mr Bhutia shared that it was a momentous day for him to be contesting elections in his home State for the first time. He has already contested Assembly and Lok Sabha elections from neighbouting West Bengal, it may be recalled.
As for the party’s election strategy, he alleged that the SDF government has failed to fulfill the basic needs to the people of Sikkim and said that the HSP will be exposing these failures.
Mr Bhutia stated that HSP’s mission was to make Sikkim corruption-free.
He thanked the party for giving him two seats.
He added that he has also prepared mini-manifestos for both constituencies.
He mentioned that he plans to make a U-16 football team each from Gangtok and Tumin-Lingee constituencies and provide them the national exposure. He also assured to identify two talented U-16 players from these constituencies to take them for trials and training to Barcelona within one year.
