All efforts on to ensure free and fair elections: SP East

GANGTOK, 28 Mar:

Superintendent of Police [East], Hem Raj Rai today said that East District Police has been making all efforts to ensure free and fair elections in the State. He added that the police have been ensuring that every political party and candidate can go to the people with their programmes peacefully.

Addressing a press conference this evening, the SP East stated that there are 214 polling booths in 12 constituencies of East District. 11 polling booths inKabi-Lungchok constituency in North Sikkim and 15 polling booths inTumin-Lingee constituency in South Sikkim also fall under the jurisdiction of East District Police.

There are a total of 240 booths falling under East District Police jurisdiction. He mentioned that 55 polling booths in East District have been identified as ‘critical polling booths’, which need more security.

“We have received three companies of SSB and two companies of SAP which have been kept in different locations in the district. We have also deployed police personnel in flying squads in East District,” the SP informed.

He added that there are a total of 30 teams of flying squads in the district and four police personnel attached with every flying squad. There are 16 Static Surveillance Teams and 28 Magistrates and one personal security officer have been given to each SST and Magistrate.

“We are holding flag march at different locations in the districts and we held flag march atleast twice in every police station jurisdiction in the district so far. We are also conducting check of vehicles by establishing ‘Nakkas’ [picket point] in different locations in East District,” the SP said.

He added that around nine ‘Nakkas’ in the district have also been conducting checking in the night as well. He added that East District police has also increased vigilance at Rangpo check-post and Reshi check-post.

“We have bound down 118 persons under section 107 of CrPC who have a history of creating trouble during elections. So the people having cases against them and history-sheeters are bound down,” the SP informed. He added that all non-bailable warrants in the district have been executed.

Out of 636 arm license holders in the district, 607 have already deposited their arms in the police station. He informed that only one case related to the election was registered otherwise the situation was totally normal for free and fair election process.

The police have been ensuring every political party and candidate gets opportunity to go to the people with their programmes and for the people to listen to them freely.
