Strong Rooms guarded 24x7, DEO reassures

Gangtok, 15 Apr:

The District Election Officer, East, in a press communiqué issued today, has assured that the EVM strong-rooms established at Brihaspati Parsai Senior Secondary School at Ranipool are being guarded 24x7 by an Sashastra Seema Bal platoon stationed in the innermost cordon.

It may be recalled that the opposition Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, while stating on record that EVMs were safe, has also laid out plans to depute party-workers to keep watch on the strong-rooms.

The DEO-East detailed today that a 3-tier security cordon was in place with SSB, Sikkim Armed Police and District Police personnel manning each layer.

Additionally, nearly 50 CCTV cameras have been installed inside each strong-room and at important points outside the strong room, the release adds.

Power backup, fire tender, fire extinguishers along with fencing around the premises have also been installed and regular visits are made of the premises by the DM and SP to monitor the arrangements.

The release goes on to state that unauthorised entry into the premises is not allowed and everyone visiting the campus needs to carry identity cards.

For any political party representative who wants to stay at the premises, a room has been identified to accommodate 2–3 representatives from a political party at a time. These people need to obtain identity cards from the DEO’s office to gain access.

The release adds that regular checking of this room will be done by SSB and in case any prohibited activity is detected, the I-cards will be cancelled.

Representatives can stay in rotation after seeking permission from the DEO, the release adds.

These arrangements will continue till the day of counting as per ECI Guidelines in this regard, the DEO informs while appealing to all to cooperate with his office in this regard.
