A Gurung Tamu magazine, Tamu Chautari, published by Tamu Lochar Organising Committee of Begha, Dentam, was released here on Sunday. The magazine features literary works in Gurung, Nepali and English languages and has Kiran Gurung as editor.
The release programme, organised by Tamu Chautari Bimochan Ayojak Samiti, had Sikkim Akademi president, Padma Shree Kedar Gurung, as chief guest.
On the occasion, the organisers also felicitated 16 personalities from the Gurung community for contributions in their respective fields. The feted achievers are: singers Naren Gurung, CB Gurung and Bhanu Gurung, entrepreneur Devika Gurung, professional footballer Robin Gurung, boxer Vabiya Gurung, litterateurs TB Gurung and Rup Raj Gurung, yoga trainer Aradhana Gurung, fashion designer Omi Gurung, social worker Bhawani Pele Gurung, bodybuilder Arun Gurung, runners Bharati Gurung and Joy Gurung, music director Kailash Gurung and comedian Dilip Gurung.
In his address, the chief guest pointed out that Gurung language has already been recognised by the State government as a State language and that it was now the responsibility of youth to power the development of Gurung language and literature.
He stressed the community needs to work together for the development of Gurung language and literature.
The Tamu Chautari editor, Kiran Gurung, in turn, spoke about the magazine and its contents and stressed the need for everyone to give continuity to this magazine through their support.
Likewise, Gurung language expert, Meghraj Gurung, delved on the condition of Gurung language in Sikkim while Amber Gurung presented a review of the magazine. The programme also featured a cultural presentation.
