Yuksom youth Nawang Gyatso Bhutia is all about butterflies

Gangtok, 30 Apr:

Meet young butterfly lover and expert from Sikkim, Nawang Gyatso Bhutia who heads BAMOS NCS (Butterflies And Moths of Sikkim Nature Conversation Society) as its president.

Hailing from Yuksom in West Sikkim, Nawang started getting interested in butterflies in 2010. Since then, he has learnt a lot about butterflies gathering information from here and there due to the lack of proper documentation on butterflies in this area.

Later, Nawang joined Butterfly India to learn more about butterflies wherein he met Peter Smetacek, Isaac David Kehimkar and Monsoon Jyoti Gogoi helping Nawang in his learning process.

Nawang also guides butterfly lovers and tourists coming to Sikkim from different parts of the country. He conducts similar tours in West Bengal and North East. He also organizes awareness programmes to sensitize people of Sikkim on butterflies and also conducts training camps in North East.

He shares that in the coming days, BAMOS will be holding awareness campaigns in schools and villages of Sikkim on butterflies.

“We will also set up stalls during big tourism events in Gangtok and circulate free butterfly posters to students, hold painting competitions to spread awareness. We also plan to hold week long training in certain villages of Sikkim,” he informs.

He says that there are total of 1349 species of butterflies in India wherein 689 species of butterflies are in Sikkim. To have so many species of butterflies in Sikkim is a good indicator of a healthy ecosystem in Sikkim, he says.
