Sikkim’s Rahul Gurung wins International Open Chess Tournament

Gangtok, 02 May:

Rahul Gurung has added another feather to his cap by emerging as the champion of the 3rd The chambu Yangwarak International Open Chess Tournament, 2019 held from 22 to 29 April at Taplejung in Nepal. He has been awarded with the cash prize of Rs 50,000 along with the winning trophy. He is also the current North East champion.

Team of 11-member Sikkim Chess Association had participated in this international chess championship. Sikkim players have returned after an impressive performance in the tournament.

Rohit Gurung stood on the fourth position in the tournament and received cash prize of Rs 30,000. Likewise, Thendup Tamang finished the tournament on the sixth position and got cash prize of Rs 25,000 and Rakesh Gurung on the ninth position and awarded with cash prize of Rs 16,000.

In Elo Rating from 1000 to 1500 rating category, Rick Gupta got the first prize and also improved 187 rating in the tournament. In unrated category, Prashant Nepali received the third prize.

Interestingly, other members of SCA have shown impressive performance and got the FIDE rating in this tournament. The new FIDE rated players from Sikkim are Abhiraj Parajuli, Abhiral Sharma, Aradhya Raj Pokhrel, Rahul Chettri and Sherap Nima Tamang.

SCA general secretary, Mahendra Dhakal congratulated the entire team for their impressive performance in this international tournament. He stated that it is a big achievement that Rahul Gurung emerged as the champion of the tournament and other players were also able to finish the tournament in good positions.

He also congratulated others for improving their rating and for becoming rated players in this tournament.

“It is a big achievement and proud moment for us that Sikkim has been dominating in chess in the North-Eastern region, North Bengal and even in Nepal in a very short time,” MrDhakal said.
