Gangtok, 03 May:
The Land Revenue and Disaster Management Department has issued an advisory today asking all District Collectors and Sub Divisional Magistrates of the State to remain alert on account of cyclone Fani hitting the Eastern coast of the country today.
The advisory states that Sikkim too is likely to receive heavy rainfall accompanied by high winds from Friday night onwards till 05 May.
It may be mentioned that cyclone Fani has already hit Odishakilling three people. The cyclone made landfall in Puri at around 8 a.m today. However, as the cyclone moves towards Kolkata and further
north east, it is expected to weaken and has been downgraded to a very severe cyclonic storm from an extremely severe cyclonic storm. The wind speeds have been reduced to 140-150 kmph from 175 kmph.
