Former PNGS Principal Miss Ritchie passes away


Gangtok, 15 May:

Isabelle M. Ritchie, who headed the Paljor Namgyal Girls’ School as Principal for 30 years since 1966 passed away on 14 May, 2019, a press release informs.

“On receipt of her sad demise, immediately school flag was flown at half-mast as a sign of mourning and PNG Family assembled for special prayer assembly and followed by two minute silence to pay homage to her dedicated life for PNG School,” the release states.

Ms Ritchie was born at Dunfermline, Scotland,in a humble background and had a burning desire to work in the field of education. She worked for 10 years in Wilson College, Mumbai, before she was called upon to join as Principal of the Paljor Namgyal Girls’ School by Scottish Mission after Miss Martha Hamilton retired as the Principal, the release mentions.

During her tenure of 30 years as Principal, she made tremendous contribution in many activities of the School, the noteworthy being opening of a special course for differently-abled children in 1981 for which she was awarded the Order of British Empire in 1982. She is also credited with introducing Girls’ Guide and NCC in the school. She left in the year 1996.

Even after she left for her country, she visited the school when she came to Sikkim from time to time.

She passed away on 14 May, 2019 at her native place Dunfermline, Scotland, UK.
