Gangtok, 24 May:

Following the announcement of the election results on Thursday, Chief Minister PawanChamling extended gratitude to the people of Sikkim through his Facebook page. He also congratulated Sikkim KrantikariMorcha and its leadership for getting the public mandate this time.

“I sincerely hope that it will be a government of the people and will fulfil their hopes and aspirations,” he wrote.

Further stating that the people have decided that SDF should perform the role of an opposition party, he wrote, “I uphold the decision of the people and promise that we will continue to safeguard the interests of the Sikkimese people with all sincerity and dedication.”

In another Facebook post today, Mr Chamling wrote that the Cabinet met at 2 pm and discussed various issues. The meeting passed the following resolution.

“The Sikkim Democratic Front is extremely grateful to the people of Sikkim, who have wholeheartedly supported our Government for twenty-five long years. It was not only our endeavour to reach the people at the grassroots but our record shows that we were able to fulfill our targets, especially in the fields of education, health, water and power supply, sanitation, welfare, tourism etc. Due to our efforts, Sikkim could become an Organic Farming State and a fully literate State and is inching towards poverty free and kutchahouse free State.

In addition, the Government was in position to provide basic minimum needs, peace and security to the people, rural connectivity, industrialization, social justice and free education up to college level. Two notable achievements of this era were:- rise in life expectancy by 11 (eleven) years and rise in forest cover by 4%.

Given a chance, the party promises to fill up the gaps and re-strengthen the uncovered pockets for further betterment of the masses.

We convey our best wishes to the government that will soon be taking over.”
