International Everest Day celebrated at Kupup

Gangtok, 29 May:

Rich tribute was paid to the first Everester, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, on the occasion of International Everest Day which also marked the 105th birth anniversary of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa at Kupup in East Sikkim.

Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Edmund Hillary had scaled Mount Everest on 29 May in 1953. Following the same, 29 May has been observed as the International Everest Day every year.

The programme, which was organised by JN Road Sherpa Kiduk, was attended by Indian Army Commanding Officer, Col Anindya Ray, as chief guest accompanied by Everester Doma Sherpa as the guest of honour.

On the occasion, the organising committee felicitated Everester Doma Sherpa, Sikkim Herald Sherpa language editor, Tarbu Sherpa, Denzong Sherpa Association former president, Lha Tshering Sherpa and Traffic Police personnel, Pema Lhamu Sherpa.

The chief guest thanked the Sherpa community of Kupup for their support to the army. The programme has also featured a cultural presentation by different organisations of the Sherpa community in the State.
