State-level steering committee on food safety and standards meets

Gangtok, 04 June [IPR]: The first meeting of the State Level Steering Committee on Food Safety & Standard (FSS) Act 2006 was chaired by Chief Secretary AK Shrivastava here at Tashiling Secretariat today.

The CS stressed upon strict implementation of Food Safety & Standard Act 2006 to ensure healthy and hygienic food to the customers. He contemplated on various aspects of FSS Act and provided advise, suggestions and important directives during a power-point presentation made by the Principal Director, Health Services, Dr Uttam Pradhan.

The Chief Secretary inquired after the registration of complaints and grievances received from the customers and urged restaurants, food outlet operators and hawkers to ensure quality of food.

He discussed various aspects of the FSS Act like constitution of committees, present structure for implementation of the FSS Act 2006, Manpower for enforcement, issuance of licenses and registration, present status of State Food Testing Laboratory, Training and Awareness, Surveillance & Inspection, IEC Activities, Clean and Safe Meat Campaign, Fortification of Food, Re-purpose used cooking oil, online payment system etc. Speaking in context of Mid Day Meal he stressed on ensuring fortified food so that children get healthy diet. 

He directed Health Deptt to organize a meeting every three months and he also expressed interest to conduct meetings under his chairmanship at the district level as well.

Further he advised that children be coached on hand-washing techniques and maintenance of personal hygiene.

Additional Chief Secretary GP Upadhyaya suggested preparing an app so that customers could get a convenient medium to register their complaints and grievances.

Commissioner-cum-Secretary Health mentioned that the subject of FSS Act 2006 carries great importance as it touches everyone’s life. He urged hoteliers to keep professional manpower to encourage self regulation of the FSS Act 2006.

Secretary, IPR, Sherap Shenga, suggested checking the source of water to find out its purity and nutritional value so as to avoid any health risks. She assured to extend all support in dissemination of information about FSS Act and to generate awareness through different mediums.

Joint Director, FCS &CA, Pintso Namgyal, urged that inspection of FCI Food Godowns be carried out in regular intervals.
