Sikkim squad excels at Chess tourney in Darj, take top-3 positions

Sikkim Chess Association [SCA] players have excelled once again, this time at the 1st Age Group & Deshraj Mittal Memorial Open Chess Tournament held on 22 and 23 June in Darjeeling.

Sikkim’s Rahul Gurung emerged as the champion of the tournament, while Rohit Gurung and Thendup Tamang stood on the second and third places in the tournament.

Likewise, another Sikkim player, Pushpa Gurung, finished on the 18th position. Sikkim players won another 10 prizes in age-group categories.

This rapid chess tournament was organised by Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Chess Association.

A total of 150 players from Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Siliguri, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Kolkata participated in the tournament as did a 30-member SCA team.

SCA general secretary, Mahendra Dhakal, who is also an international arbiter from Sikkim, was felicitated by organisers for his tireless efforts towards the promotion and development of chess in the hill region.
