Gyalshing to host first Eastern India Strengthlifting & Incline Bench Press Championship

Sikkim is all set to host the first edition of the Eastern India Strengthlifting & Incline Bench Press Championship from 12 to 14 July at Sikkim Government College, Gyalshing, auditorium in West Sikkim.

Around 250 athletes along with officials from eight States will be participating in this three-day championship. Sikkim Strength Lifting Association [SSLA] has been working on a war-footing to organise the event in a grand manner.

Addressing a press conference here today, SSLA chief coach Pema Dorjee Bhutia shared that it was an honour for Sikkim to host the first ever Eastern India Strengthlifting & Incline Bench Press Championship and stated that the State association has been working hard to ensure a grand success.

He added that SSLA joint secretary Ganesh Kumar Rai was supervising preparations at the venue.

The championship has different weight categories in Senior [men & women] and Master’s [men].

“Around 250 lifters and officials from eight States will be participating in the championship. They are very excited to visit Sikkim and it is also a good opportunity for us to showcase our rich and beautiful natural resources, culture and tradition,” Mr Bhutia said.

The participating states are Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura, Assam, Jharkhand, West Bengal and host Sikkim.

A team of more than 50 SLSA members will represent Sikkim in the championship.

He informed that SSLA has already met the Chief Minister and received an encouraging and positive response and support from him.

He added that the association also met the Sports & Youth Affairs Minister regarding this championship and received a positive assurance from him as well.

The Chief Coach expressed immense happiness on the participation of more than 20 women lifters from Sikkim in this championship.

“The participation of such a huge number of women lifters is a good sign of the development of strength lifting in the State,” he said.

He stated that the main objective behind organising such a prestigious and big event in West Sikkim was to promote strength lifting in the rural parts and encourage and motivate talented and potential lifters from different corners of the State towards this sport and to take them to national and international levels.

He also shared plans to organise such state and national events in other districts as well in the future.

SSLA has expressed its gratitude to Sikkim Government College Gyalshing for providing its auditorium and other supports to host this event.

The press conference was also addressed by general secretary, Sonam Tshering Bhutia, legal advisor, Prashant F Waiba, treasurer, Thinley Ongmu Bhutia and executive members, Homnath Sharma and Bhim Subba.
