Govt begins process to discharge slew of legal retainers

Gangtok, 12 Jul:

The State Government, it is informed, has begun the process to “dispense” with the services of the current set of legal retainers attached with various departments here.

This was suggested by one of the legal retainers served with a “notice for discharge from engagement” from the Department of Legal, Legislative & Parliamentary Affairs.

The letter conveys that “the competent authority has decided to dispense with your engagement as Legal Retainer for the aforementioned Department/ Organisation.”

The language of the letter and the fact that the typed letter carries blank spaces where the names of the advocate and the Departments are handwritten suggests that these were drafted for bulk issuance, lending credence to the whisper that a sizeable number of legal retainers are being dispensed with.

The services of legal retainers served with the communiqué [dated 10 July 2019 in the letter shared with SummitTimes] are to come to an end upon expiry of 30 days from the date of issue of the notice or on the expiry of their term of engagement, whichever comes first.
