CM disappointed with SDF’s absence from Assembly, congratulates two rebels who showed up

July 31, 2019

Gangtok, 30 Jul:

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang [Golay] expressed disappointment on the absence of most opposition legislators from the ongoing Budget Session of Sikkim Legislative Assembly. Sikkim Democratic Front, it may be recalled, has boycott the Assembly sessions to register its protest against Mr Tamang continuing as the Chief Minister even though he is disqualified from contesting elections.

Meanwhile, in the Assembly today, Mr Tamang commented that to boycott assembly proceedings instead of delivering on the role of a responsible opposition was not healthy in a democracy and should be seen as an insult of the people’s mandate.

He once again urged SDF legislators to attend and participate in the ongoing assembly session in the interest of the people.

The CM made these comments while replying to a discussion on Motion of Thanks on the Governor’s Address.

While urging the opposition leader and legislators to participate in the assembly session, the CM thanked SDF legislators GT Dhungel and Em Prasad Sharma who defied their party’s position and attended the assembly session today.

He congratulated for having taken a bold and brave decision in the interest of the people and for supporting what he held up as the “people’s budget”.

He went on to contend that Sikkim Krantikari Morcha had delivered on its role of a responsible opposition in the last five years by raising the voice of the people in the House and that it was unfortunate that the SDF leader, a former CM and a senior politician has now failed to deliver on the responsibilities of opposition.

He argued that this attitude proves that SDF runs only after power and was not interested in serving the people as an opposition party.

Speaking on the White Paper placed in the assembly on Monday, the CM invited discussions and suggestions and said that the government was dedicated to fulfill all the basic needs, hopes and aspiration of the people of Sikkim despite the huge financial obligation inherited by it.

He stated that the government has been committed to provide the best and quality medical facilities and quality education to everyone was another top priority of the State government for the inclusive development of Sikkim.

He added that the government would also work in skill development, eco-tourism and green industry on priority basis.

In his reply to discussions on Motion of Thanks on the Governor’s Address, the CM expressed gratitude towards the Governor for his address and thanked the Governor for highlighting all relevant issues and for touching every area of importance in his address.
