Defending champions, ARC Shillong, secured a berth in the semi-final round of the ongoing Independence Day Football Tournament for Chogyal Sir Tashi Namgyal Memorial Cup here at Paljor Stadium today.
Playing the last quarter-final match, ARC Shillong outplayed Sikkim Police 3-nil and became the final team to enter the semi-final round of the tournament.
Both teams played an attacking game from the start but failed to capitalise any of the several good chances in the initial minutes.
Finally, Maitshaphrang scored for ARC Shillong in the 29th minute and with another goal from the boots of N Rakesh in the 37th minute, the defending champions ended the first half with a 2-0 lead.
Sikkim Police, despite the energy of its players, had been played out of the match and remained unable to break the ARC defence. ARC also missed some good chances and just when the match appeared to be headed to a 2-0 win for ARC, H Vijesh extended the lead in the 84th minute and that is how the scoreline stayed until the final whistle.
ARC Shillong will now take on Sikkim Aakraman Football Club in the second semi-final match scheduled for 13 August.
The first semi-final match will be played between Sikkim Himalayan Sporting Club and Kalimpong XI on Monday.
