Gangtok, 23 Aug:
Speaking on the Ministry of Home Affairs’ approval for mountaineering on Khangchendzonga and other sacred peaks of the State, Chief Minister PS Tamang [Golay] today assured that the State Government would resolve the issue with the Central Government in an amicable manner.
The MHA decision has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, and the CM, while speaking at the 39th Foundation Day celebrations of Sirijunga Yakthung Sakthim Phojumbo (SYSP) at Tharpu in West Sikkim today, said that a delegation Ministers from Sikkim will go to Delhi to rectify the issue.
He maintained that the State Government was not taken into confidence by the Central government on the matter and that the MHA was unaware about the religious sentiments attached to Khangchendzonga.
The notification was an oversight and it was not for hurting Sikkimese sentiments, he said, while adding that the State Government will not allow the sanctity of the mountain to be defiled in any way.
