A group of trained theatre artists from Sikkim have come together to organise Sikkim Theatre Festival 2019 scheduled for the end of the month.
The idea is expectedly to promote theatre culture in the State and inspire the younger generation towards theatre.
The four-day long theatre festival is being jointly organised by Artist Recognize Theatre of Sikkim [ARTS] and Ujjwal Kala Kendra [UKK] in collaboration with Culture Department from 26 to 29 September here at Manan Kendra.
The first day of the festival will stage “Bhustigray Ko Subha Vivah” directed by Suman Rai performed by a group from East Sikkim which will be followed by “Aadha Adhuro” directed by Pabitra Kumari Gautam and performed by a group from West Sikkim on 27 September and another play, “Georgette Saree” directed by Bikram Lepcha by a group of South Sikkim on 28 September.
The final day of the festival will stage “Tendong-Lho-Rum-Faat” directed by Lapchen Lepcha and performed by a theatre group from North Sikkim.
Addressing a press conference here today, UKK president Kala Subba informed that their organization has been working in the field of folk songs and dance since 2004.
She added that the centre has been working to conserve traditional folk arts and culture of the State and said that they decided to support the theatre festival mainly to promote theatre in the State and support local artists.
ARTS general secretary, Deepika Chettri, mentioned that their group was established in the year 2017 to promote local artist in theatre, movie and traditional art forms of Sikkim by creating awareness among the youths through road skits, workshops and other activities.
She said that local theatre artists of Sikkim trained at the National School of Drama have come together to organise this theatre festival by involving aspiring artists of the State.
ARTS member, Suman Rai, adds that NSD-trained artists have put together these plays by involving aspiring and interested artists from their respective districts.
“We, trained theatre artists from NSD, want to prepare the younger generation in this field as it has tremendous scope,” he said.
Likewise, another ARTS member Guru Karma T Lepcha urged the people of Sikkim to support the event with their presence in large numbers on all four days.
