Sikkim Football Association [SFA] has announced plans to is hold a coaching camp starting 10 September at Paljor Stadium to prepare the Sikkim State team for the upcoming Santosh Trophy 2019-20. SFA has shortlisted 41 players from eight premier division clubs of the State for the ten-day coaching camp.
SFA released the names of the 41 footballers at a press conference held here at Football House this afternoon.
Addressing the press conference, SFA vice-president, Chewang Paul Sangderpa, informed that a selection committee led by former SAI coach, Pempa Tshering Bhutia, shortlisted players from the ongoing premier division Sikkim League.
He urged the premier division clubs to extend full support to the state camp by releasing shortlisted players from their respective clubs.
He mentioned that eventually, a 20-member squad will be selected to represent Sikkim.
SFA joint secretary, Arjun Rai, mentioned that the SFA executive committee held a meeting with representatives of eight premier division clubs of the State on Sunday evening for the upcoming coaching camp.
He further informed that representatives of premier division clubs agreed to release shortlisted players for the state coaching camp.
Mr Rai informed that the team required AFC B License coach as per AIFF norms but the State does not have any AFC B License coach so Bhaichung Bhutia has taken the special initiative to bring an AFC B License coach from outside the State. He added that the coach will be arriving in the State within a few days.
Likewise, SFA secretary Tenzing Lachungpa informs that Sikkim has been placed in group-B of East Zone along with Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand for the qualifying round in Kolkata.
Sikkim will take on Chhattisgarh in its first qualifying match on 23 September and its second match against Jharkhand on 27 September.
Likewise, SFA chief coordinator, Phurba Sherpa, mentioned that SFA wants India international from Sikkim, Nirmal Chettri, to lead the State team to Santosh trophy this time.
He added that the presence of Indian international and professional footballer will boost up the morale of the team. He further informed U-16 India team player, Evan Thapa, has also been shortlisted for the state camp.
Mr Sherpa urged all shortlisted players to report for the state coaching camp, underlining that it was a wonderful opportunity for players to represent the State at the prestigious tournament and further asserted that it was the duty of every footballer to serve the State team.
