Chief Minister, Prem Singh Tamang(Golay) attended the Self Help Group(SHG) Convention for South and West Districts at Jorethang Play Ground today.
The program focusing on National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) and North East Rural Livelihood Project (NERLP) organized by Rural Development Department (RDD) had the presence of Minister for Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), LokNath Sharma, Minister for Rural Development Department, Ecclesiastical and Cooperation Departments,Sonam Lama, Minister for Energy & Power and Labour Departments, MNSherpa alongside Area MLA Zoom Salghari, SunitaGazmer, Political Secretary to the CM, Jacob Khaling.
Secretary RDD, CS Rao, Special Secretary, RDD, Anil Raj Rai,DC South,Ragul K, SP South, PrawinGurung besides HODs and RDD officials from South and West districts, Chairmans, Advisors also attended the event.
Secretary RDD, CS Rao presented the opening remark wherein he laid out the objective of the SHG Convention. Expressing gratitude towards the CM for attending the programme, he stated that empowerment of women through programs of such nature are essential for our society as the improvement of women be it politically, socially or economically is a highly important end in itself.
Chief guest for the day,the Chief Minister in his address extended his best wishes to the three best performing SHGs of South and West districts. Announcing the distribution of laptops to 3285 Self Help Groups and 6 Village Administrative Assistant (VAAs) of South and West Districts with a purpose to strengthen and empower women in the state, the CM stated that improving women's access to secure livelihoods and economic resources which eventually will alleviate their standard of living has always been a key priority for the State Government.
He further, applauded the efforts of the women of the SHGs for their dedication towards their vocation and further gave impetus to this idea of empowering women through announcement of transfer of Rs. 5 lakh in the account of the female head of each family within the duration of five years.
The CM also reiterated the handing over of government school uniform stitching to the SHGs for fueling economic sustainability of the SHGs in every Constituency.
The CM also highlighted the achievements of the State Government in various spheres of development from the time of its formation post general elections.
Minister for RDD,Sonam Lama also addressed the gathering wherein he spoke about how the formation and existence of SHGs has several socio-economic benefits which includes economic self independence, participation in village affairs and awareness about education. He also spoke briefly about the advantages of village digitization for improving connectivity, productivity and digital efficiency.
Addressing the gathering, Area MLA,SunitaGazmer threw light on the achievements made so far under Zoom Salghari constituency. She also placed forward various demands of her constituency before the HCM.
During the course of the program, Chief Minister handed over laptops to Self Help Groups of eight blocks of South districtand six blocks of West districtalongwith six Village Administrative Assistants (VAA) of both districts. The three best performing SHGs of South and West districts were awarded with an appreciation letter and cash prize of Rs. 3 lakh,Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh respectively. The winning SHGs were Sikkim PragatisheelNari Cooperative Society, Yangthang SHG Federation and SadamRabitar SHG.
The program also saw the official handing and taking over of NERLP to NRLM.
The Chief Minister also released a newsletter of NERLP. Voice Youth Club of Namchiwere also felicitated for their commendable service towards making Sikkim a litter and a plastic free State and were presented a letter of appreciation by RDD.
