BAS readies 20-member State team for NE zone Inter-State Badminton tourney

Gangtok, 15 Sept:

A 20-member team of Badminton Association of Sikkim [BAS] is all set to represent Sikkim at the North East Zone Inter State Badminton Championship 2019 to be held from 19 to 22 September here at Paljor Stadium’s Indoor Badminton Hall complex.

The championship will feature the participation of international and top-rated players of the country from North Eastern States. The last time that Sikkim hosted this prestigious championship was in the year 2011.

The Sikkim squad comprises of: Amon Rai, Uttam Jindal, Rewash Rai, Wangyal Lepcha and Shahil Pradhan in senior men’s category, while Sunandita Bista, Selina Rai, Prasanna Pradhan, Tashi Choden Gurung and Indu Rana will represent in senior women’s category.

Likewise, the junior boys’ team members are Pranay Sarkar, Ashim Chettri, Devon Dungmali, Siddharth Gupta and Kushal Lama and Stutie Mandal, Sharika Rai, Surekha Rai, Anisha Rai and Anunaya Rai are in junior girls’ team.

Reserve players for the tournament are Brinda Gadaily, Abhigyal Jeena Lepcha, Aman Rai, Mondeep Subba and Sheeom Limboo.

Team coaches are Sameer Gurung and Ravi Rai and Diwakar Rai is officiating as team manager.

Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Kuber Bhandari, has conveyed his best wishes to the State team for the championship. Meeting the team here this morning, he also  handed over the sports kit to the players.

The state team has been undergoing a coaching camp organised by BAS under coaches Sameer Gurung and Ravi Rai here at the badminton hall. The month-long state camp was taken by 35 state ranking and other promising shuttlers at Namchi and Gangtok. In the final selection held on 02 September, 20 shuttlers were shortlisted to represent the State and five have been kept as reserve.

Speaking to media persons, team coach Sameer Gurung informed that the coaching camp will continue till 17 September after which a two-day rest will be given to the team members.

BAS president, C Zangpo, in turn mentioned that preparations for the championship have been underway on a war-footing and assured a grand event for sports lovers. He has also called upon the people to support the State team with their presence and cheering and thanked every department, organisation and individual who helped BAS host the event.
