Gangtok, 20 Sept:
Chief Secretary AK Shrivastava, accompanied by State Relief Commissioner, Ambika Pradhan, called on Governor Ganga Prasad at Raj Bhavan this evening to provide updates on the disaster that struck two villages of Yuksom block in West Sikkim on 16 September.
As per a Raj Bhavan release, the Chief Secretary submitted the report sent to the government by West District Collector on the extent of damage caused by the landslide and status of rescue and rehabilitation initiated by the district administration and State government. The Chief Secretary also briefed the Governor on the rehabilitation of displaced families both on short term and long term basis by the State Government.
The Governor expressed his concern on the status of villagers currently accommodated at relief camp at Yuksom following the calamity triggered by incessant rainfall and enquired about the facilities and amenities being provided in the relief camp. He stressed on the need to implement effective and efficient rehabilitation measures since the rescue process is over including relocating the habitation at the suitable place.
As an immediate relief, the Governor announced to contribute in Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and dispatch the relief material such as blankets, packaged food items, and mats for providing succor to the distressed families. He also expressed his deep sadness and grief on the loss of life of one elderly lady on the said calamity.
