Representatives of the Sherpa community from across the world will be in Gangtok for the 2nd Global Sherpa Day being observed on the theme 'Save Himalaya Save Earth' here on 08 October.
Global Sherpa Forum [Jambuling Sherwi Tshokpa] and Denzong Sherpa Association [DSA] are also jointly organising the “Vishwa Sherpa Sammelan” from 08 to 10 October in the State.
The three-day event will host members of the Sherpa community from over 24 countries along with Sherpas from Sikkim and the neighbouring hills.
Addressing a press conference here today, DSA publicity secretary, Phurba Tshering Sherpa, informed that the summit was held for the first time from 08 to 10 October 2017 in Kathmandu. He added that historic decisions in the interest of the Sherpa community were taken at the time.
The Global Sherpa Forum was also formed during the Kathmandu meet and the practice of celebrating 08 October as Global Sherpa Day started last year.
Mr Sherpa further informed that the main objective of this event is to bring members of the Sherpa community together on the same platform to work for the community which is otherwise spread across the world pursuing educational and economic aims.
He expressed that the Sammelan will also discuss conservation and preservation of language, religion, traditions and cultural heritage of the Sherpa community.
Speaking on the theme for this year’s Sherpa Day, he said, “We Sherpa people are very close to the Himalayas so on this day we will also take the pledge to work for the preservation and conservation of the Himalayas.”
It is informed that the event will start with a programme at Kabi in North Sikkim on the morning of 08 October followed by a meeting in the Mannan Kendra mini-hall in the evening.
The organisers will take out a procession from MG Marg to Mannan Kendra on 09 October which will be followed by the main function at Mannan Kendra. Chief Minister PS Tamang [Golay] is scheduled to attend as the chief guest.
The last day of the programme will be held at Rabongla in South Sikkim on 10 October.
