Gangtok, 04 Oct:
Sikkim Subject Committee vice-convener, Nawin Kiran Pradhan, has demanded that political leaders make their stand on the Article 371F “crystal clear.”
He stressed that Article 371F was a special safeguard provided by the Constitution to the people of Sikkim so any compromises on it will not be tolerated. The by-election was the ‘Litmus Test’ for the people of Sikkim given the present political situation.
Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Pradhan alleged that every political party in the State has a hidden agenda so it was very important for their leaders to make their stand clear regarding the Article 371F.
He mentioned that the present political situation in the State suggested that the remote control of the State was in Delhi’s hands as political parties and even independent candidates in this by-poll have some of the other connection with BJP.
“We will not allow any comprise with the special protection of the Article 371F to Sikkim,” he said.
On the reduction of the disqualification period accorded to Chief Minister PS Tamang [Golay], Mr Pradhan commented that the order was laughable in its arguments and challengeable in the Courts.
He said that ECI was a constitutional body hence should remain independent but the recent order showed that it was working on the directions of the Central government.
Mr Pradhan also questioned how such an order was passed on a Sunday or at a time when the Model Code of Conduct was already in place. He also pointed out that the order was passed a day after the announcement of an alliance between Sikkim Krantikari Morcha and BJP.
He said that the SKM leadership has sold the rights of the people of Sikkim just for its leader to be able to contest the election.
He has appealed to be conscious about the political developments and take the right decision when they go to vote.
