U-16 boys begin Vijay Merchant Trophy with resounding win over Meghalaya

Gangtok, 13 Oct:

Sikkim’s under-16 Boys Cricket Team won its inaugural match against Meghalaya today at the Vijay Merchant Trophy 2019-20 at KIIT Cricket Stadium, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha.

Sikkim won by an innings and 114 runs and earned seven points in the Northeast and Bihar Division. Sikkim is scheduled to play five matches in the tournament.

The match had begun on 11 October with Sikkim winning the toss and opting to field first and restricted Meghalaya to 134 runs thanks to some brilliant bowling by Yawar Hussain who scalped six wickets backed by Captain Tarun Sharma taking three wickets and MD Salil Ahmed taking one wicket.

Sikkim went on to score 274 runs, of which Yawar made 62 runs, Wahajat Mehdi 54 runs, Tarun Sharma 40 runs, Adiv Tamang 36 runs, MD Arif 31 runs, giving the team a lead of 140 runs.

In response, Meghalaya was bundled out for 26 runs.

Tusya Naman Sharma took 6 wickets and Yawar Hussain 3 wickets.

This is for the first time that two Sikkim bowlers have posted five-wickets hauls in a match.

Sikkim will be playing against Mizoram next, followed by Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur.
