CM kicks off Governor’s Gold Cup Royal FC wins inaugural match

GANGTOK, 01 Nov:

Royal Football Club, Siliguri, won the inaugural match of the 39th edition of All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament 2019 played under floodlights on Friday evening. A goal by NirajBasnet helped Royal Football Club to edge past the State Sports Academy, Gangtok.

Royal FC has entered the quarter-final round with this narrow 1-0 victory.

Chief Minister, PS Tamang, who was present as the chief guest, declared the tournament open.

In the 13th minute, NirajBasnet headed a cross from his teammate into an early lead for Royal FC. In return, the home team players gave their best to equalise the score but could not score any goal.

State Sports Academy players maintained constant pressure on their opponents with continuous attacks in the second half but missed the net and with the final whistle by the referee, Royal FC won the match by 1-0.

Royal FC will now take on an ISL club, Jamshedpur Football Club [Reserve] in the first quarter-final match on 05 November.

The second pre quarter-final match of the tournament will be played between Sikkim Police and BSS Sporting Club, Kolkata on Saturday afternoon at 2 PM.
