Sikkim Himalayan beats Eastern Railway to enter Gold Cup quarterfinals

Another home team has secured a berth in the quarter-final round of the ongoing 39th All India Governor’s Gold Cup Football Tournament 2019 here at Paljor Stadium today.
Playing the third pre quarter-final match on Sunday, Sikkim Himalayan Sporting Club edged past Eastern Railway Sports Club, Kolkata, 2-1.
Sikkim Police is already in the quarter-final round after having defeated BSS Sporting Club, Kolkata, in the second pre quarter-final match on Saturday.
SHSC maintained constant pressure on the Kolkata team with continuous attacks right from the start but could not convert in the first half. It was Eastern Railway players who came good first and finished the first half 1-0 ahead following a goal by Binod Yadav in the 44th minute.
In the second half, Sanjay Chettri converted a direct free-kick into the equaliser for Sikkim Himalayan SC in the 52nd minute.
Soon after, the referee offered a penalty shot to the home team in the 68th minute for a rough tackle in D-box area which was successfully converted into the lead for Sikkim Himalayan SC by Uttam Rai.
In return, Eastern Railway players played their hearts out to bounce back into the match but could not score any further goals in the match. With this 2-1 win, Sikkim Himalayan SC is through to the quarter-final round of the tournament.
Now, Sikkim Himalayan SC will take on Durand Cup 2019 champion, Gokulam Football Club, Kerala in the third quarter-final match on 07 November.
The last pre quarter-final match will be played between Kidderpore Sporting Club, Kolkata and Army Red on Monday.
