110th Devkota Jayanti celebrated in Gangtok


Gangtok, 13 Nov:

The 110th birth anniversary of Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota was commemoratedwith a special function and a literary program in Gangtok on Tuesday. The 110th Devkota Jayanti programme was organized by Vivid Kala Academy in association with Press Club of Sikkim.

This was the first time that the Devkota Jayanti was commemorated in a different day rather than observing it on the day of Laxmi puja every year. It may be mentioned here that Devkota Jayanti is usually observed on the day of Laxmi Puja during Diwali but this time the organizershas observed the Jayanti on the poet’s birthday as per the English calendar.

Addressing the occasion, litterateur Padam Bahadur Chettri presented a brief talk on the life and contributions of Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota. He said that Devkota started writing poems since the age of 10 and went onto to enrich Nepali Literature with his works.

During the special occasion, 8 local poets presented their poems. Poets Hari Dhungel, Amar Baniya Lohoro, Deo Kumar Dumi, Amir Bhandari, Khusboo Chettri, Renuka Basnett, Jagan Dahal and Santosh Subba recited their poetry on the occasion.

The function had the presence of Speaker of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly,LB Das, as the chief guest and the program was attended by eminent litterateur, poets, students and others.

The function was also addressed by the president of the Vivid Kala Acadamy, Kiran Rasaily who highlighted the importance of observing Devkota Jayanti. The programme was also addressed by others.

During the occasion, Pabitra Bhandari, who was recently awarded with Iron Lady Award was also felicitated by Vivid Kala Academy, Press Club of Sikkim, Sikkim Mahila Patrakar Sangh and Journalist Union of Sikkim.

It may be mentioned here that Devkota Jayanti programme is organized every year by the Press Club of Sikkim and this year it was co-organized by Vivid Kala Academy and Press Club of Sikkim.
